How this ATS checker works

Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) scan resumes for keywords, skills, and qualifications that match the job description before a recruiter ever sees them. This tool extracts the most important and most frequently mentioned terms from the job description, using a built-in dictionary of common skills, tools, and certifications plus frequency analysis of the posting itself, then checks how many of those terms appear in your resume.

You'll get a match score from 0-100, a list of keywords you've already covered, and a ranked list of keywords that are missing. Alongside the keyword match, the tool also reuses our word counter's readability and passive-voice analysis on your resume, because a resume that matches keywords but reads poorly still won't land the interview.

What counts as a good score?

ScoreMeaning
80-100Strong match: your resume covers most of the key terms in this job description.
60-79Good match: solid overlap, but a few important keywords are missing.
40-59Needs work: several relevant keywords aren't reflected in your resume.
0-39Weak match: your resume may need significant rework to fit this role, or this role may not be a strong fit.

Tips for improving your score

Focus on keywords that appear early in the job description or under "Requirements" / "Qualifications" headings, since these tend to be weighted most heavily by real ATS software. Use the exact terminology from the posting where it's accurate (e.g. "project management" instead of just "managed projects"), and spell out both the acronym and full term for tools and certifications (e.g. "Search Engine Optimization (SEO)"). Never add a skill you don't actually have just to raise your score.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good ATS match score?
Aim for 70-80% or higher. A score below 50% usually means your resume is missing several important keywords from the job description.
Do ATS systems really reject resumes automatically?
Many companies use ATS software to scan and rank resumes before a human reviews them. Resumes missing key terms from the job description are far less likely to be surfaced to a recruiter.
How many keywords should I include?
There's no fixed number. Focus on naturally including the skills and qualifications most emphasized in the posting, and avoid keyword stuffing.
Is this tool free and private?
Yes. Everything runs in your browser. Your resume and job description are never uploaded or stored anywhere.
