Privacy Policy
Last updated: June 2026. The short version — your text never leaves your browser, and we never ask you to sign up.
The short version
WordCount (wordcountonline.app) is a free suite of writing tools. You do not need an account to use anything on this site, and we do not ask for your name, email, or any other personal information to let you use the tools.
The text you type or paste into the word counter, essay checker, resume checker, or any other tool is processed entirely inside your own browser. It is never uploaded to, transmitted to, or stored on our servers. We literally never see it.
The site is free because it is supported by display advertising. Like most ad-supported websites, our advertising and analytics partners use cookies. The sections below explain exactly what that means and how you can control it.
What we collect
Information you give us
None is required. There is no sign-up, no login, and no contact form that stores your details. If you choose to email us directly, we will of course see your email address and whatever you write — but only because you sent it to us.
The text you enter into the tools
Nothing. All counting and analysis runs locally in your browser using JavaScript. Your document, essay, resume, or any other text is not sent anywhere. Closing the tab is enough to discard it from memory.
Data stored on your own device
To make the tools more convenient, some of them save a small amount of data in your browser's local storage. This data stays on your device and is never sent to us:
- Theme preference (
wc-theme) — remembers whether you chose light or dark mode. - Auto-saved text (
wc_text) — the word counter can restore your last session so you do not lose your work if you accidentally close the tab.
You can clear this at any time by clearing your browser's site data for wordcountonline.app, and the tools will keep working exactly as before.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics to understand, in aggregate, how the site is used — which pages are popular, roughly what part of the world visitors come from, and what kind of device they are on. This helps us decide what to improve.
Google Analytics sets cookies and may collect data such as your IP address (which Google anonymizes), browser type, and the pages you view on this site. It does not receive the text you enter into any tool. You can opt out of Google Analytics across all websites by installing the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
Advertising
This site displays ads served by Google AdSense (publisher ID ca-pub-1719218905350079). Advertising is what keeps the tools free.
- Google, as a third-party vendor, uses cookies to serve ads on this site.
- Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and other sites on the internet.
- Third-party vendors and ad networks may also use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits.
You can opt out of personalized advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings. You can also opt out of a third party's use of cookies for personalized advertising at aboutads.info/choices or youronlinechoices.eu (for EU visitors). If you use an ad blocker, every tool on the site works exactly the same.
Cookies
Cookies are small text files stored by your browser. On this site they are used only for the analytics and advertising purposes described above — we do not use cookies to build a personal profile of you ourselves. You can block or delete cookies through your browser settings at any time. Doing so will not prevent the writing tools from working; it may only affect how relevant the ads you see are.
Third-party services
WordCount relies on a small number of reputable third parties to operate. Each has its own privacy policy governing how it handles data:
- Google AdSense & Google Analytics — advertising and usage measurement, covered by the Google Privacy Policy.
- Google Fonts — the site's typefaces load from Google's servers, so your browser's request exposes your IP address to Google as part of delivering the fonts.
- Cloudflare — hosting and content delivery. Cloudflare may process request metadata (such as your IP address) to deliver pages securely and protect against abuse.
Data security and retention
Because the text you enter is never sent to us, there is no document of yours sitting on a server that could be lost or breached. The only data tied to your use of the tools — your theme choice and auto-saved text — lives in your own browser and persists until you clear it. Aggregate analytics data is retained by Google according to the retention settings on our account and Google's own policies.
Children's privacy
WordCount is a general-audience writing utility and is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information through direct contact, please email us and we will delete it.
Your choices
- Use the tools without providing any personal information — this is the default.
- Clear your browser's stored data for this site to remove the saved theme and text at any time.
- Opt out of personalized ads and analytics using the links provided in the sections above.
- Use an ad blocker or privacy browser — the tools are designed to work fully either way.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time as the site evolves or as legal requirements change. When we do, we will revise the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Significant changes will be reflected clearly here. Continued use of the site after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
